![And the question I get asked the most (sometimes even by myself at 3am) is — WHY?
🙇🏻Well! I hear many stories from parents and one of the most common fears with night wakings revolves around a particular waking pattern everynight🌙
👶🏻😴Your baby falls asleep at bedtime and can sleep quite well for 2-3 hours coming to a full awakening - let’s say this happens at 11pm.
⏰11pm - Feeding
Everyone goes back to sleep...
⏰1am - Baby is Awake again so we feed
⏰3am - Awake again... (couldn’t possibly be hungry?? - but we feed)
⏰5am - Awake again... awake the day or feed?
⏰7am - Awake for the day
📢It’s not uncommon for babies to follow what I call a SNACK FEED, where they wake 1-2 hours after the feed until morning.
🧠This is related to the science of sleep. At the beginning of the night, your baby is in their deepest stage of sleep and as you progress throughout the night the sleep gets lighter and then spend more time in REM - Active stages of sleep.. This can result in more wakings as there are more vulnerabilities in light sleep!!
This pattern is commonly occurs for OVERTIRED babies and this will never STOP.

![5 sleep habits I gently moved away from as a baby sleep expert 🌙
These are the most common baby sleep mistakes I see parents making and small shifts that lead to longer stretches, calmer nights, and easier naps.
1️⃣ Letting baby stay up late hoping they’ll sleep longer 🥱::
Overtired babies actually wake more often and sleep more restlessly. This will eventually turn to habit wakeups post 4 months..
TIP:: An age-appropriate bedtime is the foundation of better sleep.
2️⃣ Feeding to sleep as the only way to settle 🤱::
Feeding to sleep is biologically normal and beautiful but past 4/5 months, if it’s the only sleep association, baby may need a feed at every wake to fall back asleep.
3️⃣ Relying on cradle/jhula or pram/car rides for every nap 🔄::
Motion sleep is lighter and less restorative. Occasional? Lovely. Daily and only? It’s worth gently transitioning to a still sleep space. TIP:: Transition atleast one nap to bed or cot would help baby to restore long sleep..
4️⃣ Bright rooms for naps & blue/white night lights 💡::
Light suppresses melatonin secretion (the sleepy hormone). TIP:: A dark room for naps + a warm red/amber night light (for feeds) supports baby’s natural body clock.
5️⃣ Offering hourly night feeds at every single wake 🌙::
For older babies (6m+), not every wake is hunger. Sometimes it’s habit, sometimes a sleep association.
TIP:: Gentle responsive settling can help baby link sleep cycles without always needing a feed.

![Ever noticed your baby getting fussy, arching their back or crying harder 20-40 mins right before sleep?
